Do you want to get started with learning how to code and use a computer like actual scientists do?
Participants in the class will work with Raspberry Pi (RPi) computers. These computers are highly versatile and extendable. The students in this program learn to operate a variety of different components (e.g., temperature sensors, humidity, GPS, LEDs, displays, camera). In addition, the RPis can be connected to Geiger counters to measure natural radioactivity levels and to learn about radiation safety.
The course is available in two different formats. In the in-person format every summer, students will come to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus. Upon successful completion students will be able to receive college credit. A self-guided online version is currently under development.
The course will be taught by Professor von Doetinchem and his team from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The team’s research is focused on particle physics in space. They work with an instrument on the International Space Station, work with NASA, and are regularly at CERN in Switzerland, which is home of the biggest particle accelerator in the world.
